About Department
TECHNOLOGY STUDIES BACKGROUND The Technology Studies study area has Home Economics and Design & technology. Technology Studies is a curricula designed to produce literacy design and other related technologies. It is offered as a school subject at all levels of Primary and secondary.
As a school subject, it involves students in designing in a practical context with a focus on for example, food, textiles, graphic communication, tools and equipment, building construction and materials or digital media. ACTIVTIES HE : • Food Production • Home Keeping • Hospitality • Designing & Tailoring D&T: • Furniture Making • Building Construction • Designing & Planning RATIONALE Technology Studies plays an important role in providing students with survival skills, creative experience and develop a practical identity and a capability for innovation. The course provides an opportunity for collaboration, team working and communication skills that are essential for future employment. Technology Studies enable higher level of cognitive skills to be developed in the learner-developing hypothesis, synthesis of ideas and reflection. It also provides an opportunity for examination and critical evaluation of the made-world. Thus it offers the opportunity for students to investigate and evaluate the use of materials in products and designs and the consequent depletion of earth’s resources. Technology Studies has the ability to deepen the understanding of physical principles through modelling and testing. It supports the economy by helping to prime young people and develop skills in creativity, innovation and engineering.
The programme provides a truly authentic experience of a practical work environment and it is therefore, a course through which the country can grow its future designers and engineers AIMS: The aims of Technology Studies are to enable trainee teachers to develop: • Ability to teach Technology Studies as a subject effectively from grades 1-7. • The ability to solve practical and technological problems using process of of analysis, synthesis and realization. • The desire to relate their work to personal interest and abilities by learning and experimenting with materials in practical areas. • Improve technological awareness, attitudes of cooperation and social responsibility and ability to enhance the quality of the environment. • Curiosity, inquiry, initiative, ingenuity, resourcefulness and discrimination abilities. OBJECTIVES: • Demonstrate sound knowledge and skills in Technology Studies for effective teaching • Interpret concepts that will provide learners with solid foundation in the subject area. • Provide gender and equality in technology Studies. • Demonstrate appropriate and effective methods of teaching in Design & Technology and Home Economics. • Assess learner performance through various assessment procedures. • Acquire knowledge and values on safety and health. • Develop patterns and manipulate tools and equipment used in Technology Studies.
